Here's your 1st base platoon Offord

The Pirates have signed Garrett Atkins. The same player who averaged 25 home runs and 110 RBI's from 2006-2008, not to mention a rookie year in 2005 where he hit .287 with 13 Hr's and 89 RBI's. Of course, this was in the thin air of Coors Field with (the future hall of famer?) Todd Helton and Matt Holliday hitting around him, which is the equivalent of a Kevin Stevens scoring 50 goals from playing with Lemieux and Jagr...anyone read me? Imler?

Anyway, it looks like the Pearce discussion is out the window; if Atkins makes this team and proves he can come close to the production he enjoyed with Colorado (under clint hurdle by the way), he will prove an adequate bat off the bench and a nice replacement from time to time for Offord's most wanted Lyle Overbay and our future Prince Fielder; Pedro Alvarez, when we face off against a lefty that will no doubt be better than ours.

I do not mind this signing, but yet again, where do you get the idea that he will replicate those numbers? he was a disaster in baltimore. i would love to see him regain those early numbers, but it just will not happen.

Thats why I said "if"

FINALLY THE MISSING PIECE!

At least the difference between now and 2001-2008ish the contracts for the washed up players haven't been too terrible...

Atkins won't even make the team. That is my prediction.

yeah, at least teams are realizing how much players are werth...get it??? c'mon people, that was a great pun, i should write for the washington post...

Hey I would have rather than wasted money on Werth than signed Overbay.

Not really, but I like Werth.

Bad typo - rather wasted money on Werth than sign Overbay, I meant

i'd rather have overbay at whatever we got him for than werth at $126 million. i guess that one helps the players union since cliff lee hurt them.

Brandon Webb just signed for $3MM? We paid more for Correia! I would have given Webb 3 years 5MM+ a year. Then again, I haven't seen him throw. He must have lost a lot to get that shitty of a contract...

ya I heard he was topping out at 81 MPH in his latest rehab stints...but still the upside of a guy like that? The main reason the Pirates couldn't get a guy like Webb, is because Webb wants to win. He knows that won't happen in Pittsburgh...oh well

Also, Webb only wanted a 1 year deal so he can reestablish his worth throughout the season and into his next free agent period in 2011.
