Fantasy Baseball 2010

Hey guys, guess what time of year it is? That's right, it's fantasy baseball time. I will be starting a league soon on yahoo and you all are invited to join.

I want to start a discussion about it right now. I am saying only one league this year, lets discuss what stats to use. And we need everyone involved to be die hard.

Obviously these are the people I know will join: myself, Offord, Imler, Ryan, Gideon. I am hoping Ryan can get Singer, Dave, and Ruskin. Hopefully James will participate.

We would just need four more folks to have a successful and highly competitive league. Let me know.

I like splitting the pitching stats as 2 or 3 categories that benefit pitching skill, 1 or 2 that benefit large amounts of a particular stat, plus Holds and Saves. That way, the "Singer" strategy can only guarantee 1-2 points. Stats like Wins, CGs, and Strikeouts are quantity based, but ERA and any other percentage stats are quality based. I like having holds and saves, but I'd understand if the majority wants only Saves.

Therefore, I would pick ERA, WHIP, W, SO/9, S, H. That's my 2 cents on pitching.

For hitting, I'd keep it even with pitching and have 6 stats - H/AVG, R, HR, RBI, SB, OPS.

Let me know what you think. I'm always open to the lesser known stats as well.

At the moment I cannot think of any better pitching stats.

Instead of OPS, why not use OBP? Here is my reasoning, OPS is generally going to be directly related with high HRs/RBIs, whereas OBP can tie more with R/AVG/even SB.

Plus it OBP allows me to draft Adam Dunn in a much higher round.

Also, I need some dates thrown around for a draft.

If OBP and HR were the only stat, Adam Dunn would be a top 5 pick.

I am currently laid off so any time works for me...

Why can't we make the sixth stat also go against quantity so they balance each other out. Like losses as a stat. For the most part, if singer partakes, he takes whoever is available on the waiver wire which is the bottom of the barrel type pitcher. The 4th or 5th man of the rotation or worse. Or you can go with something like OBPA, instead of hits, something like that.

I also agree that the pitcher/hitter stats should be distributed evenly and I also have no problem with the hitting stats offord suggested. though obp, may be better than ops.

The date to do the draft may have to be a friday/saturday/monday night or any day sunday. Because my schedule is pretty consistent since i kind of make it myself. It would have to be around 8 or later. But i'm good all day sunday.

Ryan, I think Offord meant Holds (not hits). But I see your point. I have no problem with holds, it makes it fun looking for middle relievers.

I will look at my schedule and try to figure out a date for the draft.

Offord, I am sorry to hear about you being laid off. I am looking for a personal assistant, it does not pay much (meaning zero), but it does offer valuable experience.

Problem, if we take away Ks and replace it with K/9, how will that affect the dynamic of our league. What the hell do I mean? Let me explain...

Usually, some of your better K/9 guys are relievers. Would everyone be better off just drafting relievers, especially ones that at one point were SP...aside from Wins, all the other stats would benefit relievers over starters.

Anyone think it would be interesting to have a 25 man roster that fits with actual teams? I know you'd be bottom feeding but I think it would be cool.

Ngewo said...

that would be an extra long draft, adding ten more rounds or whatever.

J Offord said...

Yea that is true. If only like 4 people were playing in it it wouldn't be too bad

Ngewo said...

Well apparently we only have five so far, hope more people join. also do want k/9 or just k?

K is fine with me
