what the wii is supposed to be
ok. i'm not big on reviews or anything, and have no desire to do such generally. but i do want to commend the makers of the game, "the force unleashed" for the nintendo wii. this game does exactly what the wii was meant to do. you totally forget that the game looks so much cooler on the other platforms. instead, you are immersed in the game. this game is the first game that defines why i purchased a wii last summer. this is the first game that i have been interested in playing alone for the wii. to this point the wii was a party game system, but this game makes the wii fun to play alone, which is a real accomplishment.

Awesome. Glad you found a good Wii game - they can be hard to come by. I tried the Force Unleashed demo on PS3 and was not blown away. I also just started playing the Wii version of Okami, which is amazing if you're looking for another good Wii game. Also, if you've never tried the Gamecube game Eternal Darkness, it plays on the Wii and is a lot of fun.

yea, the thing that makes the game so fun on the wii is the immersiveness it adds. the force push is a real push, also, a game for the wii finally added several directional controls for a sword. so many of the other games were just little flicks, like zelda. but this, there are 5 different directional moves you can do with the wii-mote. that is what makes the game. i'm not sure it would be anywhere near as cool on the other systems.
Sounds cool. What type of actions do you perform when you're playing?
My favorite is the slow jerk left then right...oh wait, we are talking about Wii still.
creepy ngewo. creepy.
in response to offord...
basically you use the remote in the right hand (could be left in theory) as the lightsaber. each direction performs a different direction attack, including forward, which stabs. combinations of directions do different things.
the other thing, the nunchuk or whatever it is called, that is used to move around through the game. two buttons control some of your force powers. but the push, throw, and choke are all controlled by moving that thing around. push is forward. choke is holding a button and turning the thing upside down. throw is holding a button and moving the thing in whatever direction you want to toss the person/thing.
all of this combines to actually make the first interesting wii game. the MLB (not an EA game, but the other sim that is out there) is pretty fun too actually. but, eventually i kind of just stopped playing it, but that basically happens with anything. other than those 2, the wii has been pretty disappointing as far as games go. but it looks like it continues to have more and more potential.
ok. well... frankly, i want to amend my comments a little. the game would be better if it was a little longer. on the bright side, they let you play through again with the powers and stuff you have already accumulated, but lets see how long that holds my interest. i really only put about 8-9 hours into the game. that is not enough at all for $50. what ever happened to games like FF7 where you put 80 hours into the thing to do everything. gid knows what i'm talking about...
I'm currently playing Okami on the Wii, and it's yummier than a pancake. The gameplay probably isn't as good as Twilight Princess, but the game looks AMAZING.
I have put sooo many hours into trying to do everything in ff12...i played through twice, and got everything except beating Yiazmat (and in turn the Wurm Hero Sword, or whatever it was called), Omega, and getting the Zodiac Spear.
Then I moved in with my gf and my dream of doing everything was shattered :(
Anyway, point is that some games are great and give you sooo much to do. God of War 2, on the other hand, I completed in about 2 days..
You can't really compare genre's like that, though. Action games will never last as long as RPG's. If they did by the time you got to the end you'd be bored with it, trust me. Whether or not a sub-10 hour game is worth full retail price is debatable, however.
When compared to other forms of entertainment, games come out way ahead. Just what can you get for $50, anyway? 5 trips to the movies. 3-4 if you get food. That only totals 6-10 hours of entertainment. A few hardcover books, each of which can be finished in a weekend if you're into them. You couldn't even sit in the balcony of a broadway show. Maybe a concert ticket, if you're lucky (3-4 hours). A couple of sporting events (6-7 hours). The fact that games last for up to 9 hours is great, in my opinion. Fill that time frame up with quality gameplay and I'm quite satisfied. I even like it when games are shorter because of how much spare time I have these days. With the number of A-list games released over the course of the year, there's no way you can get through a lot of them if they're all 40 hours long.
If you're worried about game length vs. initial cost, perhaps a gamefly account would work for you (netflix for games).
Regarding the wii, I'd say there are a lot more than 2 good games available (the funniest part being I wouldn't even list the 2 you did as being in the top 10, though in all fairness I haven't played Star Wars). Even if you exclude the ports from last gen systems (Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, and Okami; all great games) there are still such gems as Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band (though you should get either the 360 or PS3 versions of those if possible), Boom Blox. If you're counting advanced Wiimote functionality as the criteria for a game being "good" I'd say Zack and Wiki, Metroid Prime 3 (again), even WarioWare (though that's more of a rental). Overall, there are still way less quality games available than other current systems, but to say that there are only 2 means that either you haven't actually played a lot of these games or you're dismissing some of this stuff based on some other arbitrary factor. What's really unfortunate is that there really isn't anything on the horizon for the system. At all.
Great list of games. The Wii does have some really good stuff. I just started Okami last week, and it's amazing - I just wrote a piece about it on Lungfishopolis.com. You did forget No More Heroes, which was a great game, and De Blob, which sounds good although I haven't yet played it. Wii music is coming out on October 20th, but that looks terrible. You're absolutely right that there's nothing on the horizon for Wii. I guess I'm looking forward to Dead Rising: Chop Til You Drop, but that's it.
Here we go:
Nintendo Wii Fall 2008 Software Lineup.
The new Punchout looks awesome.
That clip showed some potential (the only "must buy" for me I recognized on there was Tatsunoko vs. Capcom). The new Punch Out and Sin and Punishment games should be good, though with the Punch Out games (contrary to what you may read elsewhere on this thread) I worry about its lasting power. And there appeared to be an RPG or 2 among the bunch, though probably nothing of Squeenix caliber.
Wii Sports Resort and the Klonoa game should also be pleasant diversions. It was also a plus that some of those clips actually included characters with realistic proportions!
1) Gideon: What exactly do you mean by Punch Out's staying power?? When I have a few spare minutes to play my NES emulator my first choice is always Punch Out. No exceptions (followed closely by Contra (the only good Contra) and Blades of Steel).
2) I was sooo excited for a new Punch Out that it was all the more disappointing when I watched the preview and saw that the characters are exactly the same...With all the storage on dics can't they make a more comprehensive Punch Out? Like...more characters to choose from, more opponents to fight. How hard can it be to come up with comical enemies? Maybe the market just doesn't share my love of this game...
3) I'm getting a ps3 in a few weeks, any game suggestions?
I can give you some ps3 game suggestions.
The only two discs I've owned for the PS3 were Assassins' Creed, which was okay but not great, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, which was pretty good. Also, if you haven't tried Orange Box, you MUST buy it - I played on PC, but it's a tremendous value: Half-Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, and the HL2 episodes. HL2 is probably #1 on my personal best games of all time list.
Some of the downloadable games are really good. I'm a HUGE fan of Pixeljunk Monsters, and although I didn't like Pixeljunk Eden, it got great reviews.
Some people have really like Metal Gear Solid 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Resistance: Fall of Man. I never tried those - they never appealed to me.
Some really great stuff for PS3 is coming soon too: Dead Space, Fallout 3, LittleBigPlanet, Spore, and Bioshock.
FF13 at some point in my lifetime...I can understand why it takes so long to produce these games, but why drag out the release date so many times? Just say 2009 and that's the end of it...
Anyway, I have the orange box for PC as well, but haven't played HL2 since college...I still play cs every once in a while, not quite so addicted as I used to be...terrific games though.
Umm, I feel like this topic is very interesting, yet I know nothing about it. So how about Tecmo Bowl? They making that for the Wii or PS3, that would prompt me to buy one.
1) Offord: I was just referring to the game length, rather than replay value. I can beat Punch Out and Super Punch Out in under an hour from start to finish. Punch Out I can beat in under 20 minutes if I have a good run. Gamers these days just won't accept that length of play for a full priced game, no matter how fun it is.
Regarding PS3 games, Greg gave a good list (its Metal Gear Solid 4, though); besides GTA4 there's also Call of Duty 4, Ratchet and Clank 4, Devil May Cry 4, Soul Calibur 4, Elder Scrolls 4, Burnout 4, Guitar Hero 4 comes out soon... I'm sensing a trend here. I'm also looking forward to Resident Evil 5!
2) Josh:

True, Punch Out is fast. That's why I play it when I have a free 20 mins. Using save state you can beat the game in about 10 minutes...
I guess I meant they could just expand on the basics while including the old characters...I wonder if anyone will complain about some being racist...
I feel like making an NES game post now..but as for old punch out characters, I think the countries used were France, Germany, Spain, Turkey, India, Japan, Russia, and the US. That leaves plenty of prime countries like England, Mexico, Australia, Italy, etc. Ideas? Does anyone care? Probably not...
Techmo Bowl rocked too, though, good call Josh.
Ha! Using save state, I can beat the game in literally one second. ;-)
