All Things Pirates - Part 2: Monroe or Hero?

This is shameless theft from Mondesi's House, but let's see who can come up with the best caption for this photo. Mine is "Remember the first rule of baseball, do not sign with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The second rule of baseball, is do not sign the with Pittsburgh Pirates..."

Finally the Pirates have found the missing piece to the puzzle! Craig Monroe, who was not mistakingly left off my shatty veteran free agent list (you can't really be described as "veteran" until you're over 35, washed up, and injury/cocaine prone)

Some fun facts about our future HOFer:

- His full name is Craig KEYSTONE Monroe. Try and tell me he wasn't destined to play for the Pirates.

- His mother's name is Marilyn. Oddly enough, she also sang for the president and slept with Joe DiMaggio.

- I checked his DNA, he is not related to Raul Mondesi, Derek Bell, OR Jeremy Burnitz (collective sigh of relief).

Joking aside, this signing could be worse. We didn't give him much money, and he has shown at least a slight bit of potential. For once, I think the risk is worth the reward. Although the reward won't ever be more than .250 25 70, good enough for our RF though. News from Bradington is that Gorzo and Moss are in terrific shape, Brad Lincoln is syked to tear a vital arm tendon all over again, and no one knows where Adam LaRoche is. Maybe he's hanging from a ceiling fan after a long, cold winter of agonizing over another year with Pittsburgh.

Plenty more info from the PBC blog...

Quote of the Day comes from Cy Young qualified pitcher Paul Byrd - "I got some really nice offers," Byrd said. "That's what made it hard. [There were some] nice offers from very competitive big-time teams that just need someone to fill in at the back end of their rotation. I also got an offer or two from small-market teams that said they wanted me to come in and be their No. 1 or [No.] 2 guy." Really? What Godawful team would make a 39 year old pitcher who never had a better ERA in his career than 3.74 their No. 1 or 2 starter? Good luck finding a veteran team that will actually use you in the postseason...A-hole.

Craig Monroe=Jason Michaels. Nothing major there. check out both of their lines from last year, almost identical.

Except Michaels is a year older, but yea, not much difference. I liked Michaels though off the bench and as a backup OF.

for the picture how about Van Slyke and Leyland to Monroe: "Yea...playing for the pirates kind of feels like this"

I also like the Monroe signing. I hope it compares to the signing of Reggie Sanders in 2003. Tho I did like Michaels a little better...white power! haha, j/k....White Power!

And the storm clouds start rolling in...

"UPDATE 11:52 a.m.: Karstens did not pitch today because of minor elbow discomfort, according to the team. Neal Huntington said it was 'nothing at all serious.'"

:-( fyi it is illegal to make this face now without referencing some company who trademarked it...

Alright folks, I'm out until Monday. Enjoy the Steelers game! FYI, my new favorite Pirates player is Donnie Veal. More on him next week.

I know how much Josh loves chants, so...

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!!!

I am indifferent to Monroe. This will not be like the Sanders signing. If he hits more than 15 HRs this year I would be extremely shocked.

The poll question is whether Monroe is the best RF candidate, and I have to say no. If Moss comes back healthy, I have to think he is a better candidate.

Move Nate over to LF, let NyMo start for a bit (but if McCutchen tears it up in Spring Training, then he needs to be brought up soon, apparently he bulked up and looks good...) at CF, and Moss over at RF. Or platoon Moss/Pearce, and allow Monroe to come off the bench...

How about:
"hey, it could be worse... you could be a kansas city royal. then you only have chiefs football to look forward too. and silly light blue uniforms."
