Sean Penn is a Douchebag Asshole

If anyone caught his Oscar "speech," and I use that term lightly, you probably know what I mean. As I predicted when I made some Oscar picks, Penn undeservedly (okay I don't know that for sure because Milk is the only one I didn't see) won because he and the Academy have circle jerks twice a month. He had to carefully read notes to quickly thank people, which seemed so in genuine I almost punched the screen, then he put the notes down and lectured the world on gay rights. Fine, okay, you want to express your opinion, I am okay with gay rights, but this? "I think it's a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect on their great shame and their shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that support." Why? Because you won best actor? You're right, that means the entire country supports you and your gay rights movie. Maybe you need to take a trip to Alabama and find out why half the country still disagrees. Hell, even California, the most liberal state out there, disagrees. He said some other stuff about this being the most horrible disaster in the history of the world (not verbatim), but telling us that we should have shame on ourselves? Ahh...douchebag.

On to other things, back when I made my best actor predictions, I claimed Clint should be nominated but I hadn't seen Brad Pitt or Richard Jenkins. Well, now that I've seen Benjamin Button and The Visitor, I can definitively say that Eastwood blew them both out of the water. I saw Frost/Nixon on Friday, and fell asleep about 10 times during the middle. But, Frank Langella was amazing as Nixon and the movie was almost worth the ending. It was very similar to A Few Good Men without Tom Cruise in tight baseball pants. So, I would probably rank it Rourke, Langella, Eastwood, and Penn somewhere in there.

Congrats to Kate Winslet on her stirring portrayal of a Nazi slut. Your acting was so genuine that I almost believed you were naked throughout the entire movie...

Why wasn't Bruce Springstein's song at the end of The Wrestler nominated, again? I forget. Instead, 2 Slumdog musical numbers were nominated...sigh.

Congrats to Slumdog Millionare on winning, it was the best movie that was nominated. Let's just hope the "trust fund" set up for the impoverished children who starred in the movie actually exists, and that they won't be dead before they get it.

At the end of the broadcast, they showed upcoming 2009 movies. They look really good and I can't wait, especially for Inglorious Basterds.

That's it for me I think with 2008. Sean Penn will be starring in a Three Stooges movie this year as Larry...let's hope someone accidentally sticks a knife in his eye...or better yet, his mouth.

I was not even remotely excited about the Oscars this year. Obviously, since I did not care to start a poll or even write my predictions up on my own blog.

Three Stooges the movie looks like the worst idea ever. Did I hallucinate that Johnny Depp will play Moe? Who will be Curly? Or more importantly, who will play Schempf?

i'm actually somewhat with you on this. i actually support gay rights broadly, sean penn is a douchebag asshole.

at the end of the day, gays are not as oppressed as blacks ever were (and still are), hispanics, jews, and atheists.

more importantly, this guy is an actor, and not a smart one at that. anyone that is as friendly with chavez and castro as he is is not clear on the definition of freedom.

he behaves like a 14 year-old who's angry and just doesn't get it. he has no recognition of the disconnect that keeps his goal, of gay rights, from being accomplished. both sides are lecturing each other on morality. (which i note is a concept that i do not believe in). that debate is never going to win, you have to re-frame it, shaming people isn't going to work. its a ridiculous and self-righteous and aggrandizing strategy. its straight out of the christian right playbook.

too many people make claims of moral superiority, especially when they are in no position to defend it.

embrace ambiguity.

don't be afraid to say "i don't know."

by alleviating all the moral certainty, they you can begin to establish why a reasonable and free society should provide this particular group with equal rights as everyone else.

nothing undermines a free and just society like universal truth.

That's all well and good, except the conservative right will never say "I don't know." Believe me, they just know...

I have never really experienced the debate for gay rights in my time in Pittsburgh, State College, and DC, so really I could care less. I just don't like Sean Penn and that smug look he always has on his face. South Park, please destroy him.

yea, underlining this whole argument is my primary world-view argument... that religion is bad and should be removed from rational, civil, modern society.

i read a good point, along the lines of my point.. which is that both sides hold fundamental positions at odds with one another which are hopelessly and completely irreconcilable, and both are supported by human rights arguments.

first being that the right has the freedom of religion argument, which they claim prevents them from having to recognize homosexual unions. the gay rights side has the declaration of human rights freedom to marry argument, which some in that community argue would force churches, mosques, and synagogues to recognize gay unions and be unable to discriminate against them. effectively, this group wants to make it so that the religious cannot demonize homosexuality as immoral. which is a position many religious individuals do not want to discard.

you are right, offord, that the conservative right (of all religious stripes) will not relent that they may be wrong or they do not know. watch religulous or the richard dawkins anti-religion documentary to see great examples of this. you can't expect people who believe in talking serpeants or that the ten commandments are a legitimate moral code to get this right.

aside from the moral/religious objection (i use moral condescendingly, if such is even possible) there is not much reason why the conservative right objects to same-sex marriage. it is sad that penn (whom i don't find that interesting) stoops to their level with this argument. you aren't going to win gay rights by converting the religious to your viewpoint, you'll do it by getting libertarian style republicans (small government in every sense) to recognize the interference in individual rights that marriage restrictions on individuals over 18 years of age actually are. another unfortunate fact revolves around the membership of our house and senate... more of those people than you'd like to think espouse outdated bronze-age belief systems about the beginning of the universe and life itself.

but ultimately, i agree with you on sean penn. i do not watch his films because of this. he's boring and cliche. but he seems to think he's so hip and modern. smug, as you put it, seems very accurate.

Penn is a Leftwing Liberal ASSHOLE..!! I knew they'd (LeftWood) give the Oscar to the sawed off little prick.

I would love nothing more than to run into the little asshole one day and tell him just what I think about him. Since he has this rep for being a BADASS I may have to defend myself...OH WHAT FUN..!!!!

jason's sense of said...

its not very fair to combine "leftwing liberal" and "asshole" in the manner its being used. sure, he's an ass. but it has nothing to do with his politics. its his self-assured, overconfident, smug persona.

in a lot of ways, i'm left wing. i'm pro-choice, i'm pro-gay rights, i'm an atheist, i believe we are too loose with government intrusion (wiretaps, warrants, probable cause), and i think we over extend the actual constitutionality of government takings. those positions do not make me an asshole. how i treat other people, that sort of thing, would have a direct impact on it.

the right has plenty of, if not more, assholes. and for every claim of left-leaning hollywood, there's right leaning radio and TV.

that remark is exactly why no one has any good ideas.

I'm on the Right on most issues, except when it comes to Porn, Pot, and Religion.

I think that most (90%) of all Leftwing Politicians, Media, Hollywood Types and Collage Professors are idiots that are/will destroy this country...MY COUNTRY!!! SOOOOO...in my opinion they are all Gutter Trash..!! And Sean Penn in my opinion is in that group.

Are there people on the Right who belong in the above group..Absolutely.

People who force laws down my throat and steal money (taxes) from me to support some lame ass social program in my opinion is an ASSHOLE!!!

If the shoe fits wear it.

Alright this post was about Sean Penn being a scumbag, not a steamed political debate. Cool it. Although it is nice to know, I guess, that someone other than Josh, Ryan, Gideon, and Imler actually read this blog...

Oddly enough one of our first outside readers (I do not count Greg or Jason, since they are readers of my blog) happens to be very angry.

It is fun to see someone else scream and yell instead of just me at Ryan, or Offord at Ryan...

why is everyone screaming at me? I just like to offer you guys some debate because you both seem to lick each others assholes when it comes to your "statistical analysis" of sport. I just like to mix it up.

I can't really explain it, Ryan. Some things just are and always will be.

I love this!SEAN PENN IS AN ASHOLE.First and Foremost, but his views and attitudes are what continue to be the very reason WHY is is an asshole.
It's cocky LITTLE fuckers like him, that want to FORCE people to accept their perversions, and homo friendly hollyweird reality.
He thinks he's better than anyone, and can just continually break the law and get away with it.
The liberal judges in califorication need to get some nuts and lock his ass up!

FUCK YOU SEAN PENN! This is the first thing that comes to my mind after seeing this bastard say that anyone who calls Hugo Chavez (Venezuelan president) a dictator should be imprisoned. If he likes communism so bad why is he living in the US then? Easy to talk the talk when you are pretty safe uh? So yeah, FUCK YOU SEAN PENN!
